Vodka Dew

August 1960
Why has there never been a commercial honeydew soda? After you try this refreshing summer cooler you’ll ask yourself the same thing. We initially followed the recipe but didn’t love what happened to the melon when it cooked. It’s more to our taste to blend the melon, water, and sugar, force the mixture through a sieve, and chill it. For each drink, we combine 3 ounces of the honeydew mixture with 1 1/2 ounces vodka and ice and topped it all with a splash of soda. Mint has a real affinity for honeydew, so don’t skimp on the garnish.

Scoop enough meat from a small honeydew melon to make 2 cups of melon pulp. Add 1 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes. Let it cool for 2 hours and chill it. Force the cooked fruit and syrup through a sieve and add 3 tablespoons vodka and 1/2 cup crushed ice, or purée it in a blender with the vodka and ice. Half fill a tall glass with the purée and add a dash of soda water. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
