Sloe Gin Fizz

July 1961
When and why sloe gin became the bottle of choice for teenagers looking to get looped is not only unknown but incomprehensible. Presumably the kid-friendly purple color had something to do with it, and maybe every family’s liquor cabinet had a half-empty bottle the parents wouldn’t miss. But it’s a shame that this infusion of sloe berries in gin has become associated with youthful indiscretion. This is a classic cocktail, and now that Plymouth has begun sending some of its delicious sloe gin to the U.S., there’s even more reason to show the sloe the respect it deserves.

Pour 2 ounces sloe gin into a cocktail shaker one-third full of cracked ice and add the juice of 1/2 lemon. Add 1/2 teaspoon fine granulated sugar and shake the mixture well. Pour it into a chilled 12-ounce highball glass. Fill the glass with soda water and stir lightly to blend.
