Cocktail of the Week: Wicked Kiss

07.06.09

The Widow’s Kiss is a very old applejack-based cocktail. This variant, which adds rye to the formula, comes from the Ardent Spirits Web site and is credited to Philip Ward, who recently opened Mayahuel, an East Village bar dedicated to agave-based spirits. We first tasted a Wicked Kiss at Dutch Kills, a new bar from Sasha Petraske, one of the seminal figures in the cocktail revival of the 2000s.

In a mixing glass 3/4 full of cracked ice, add 1 oz rye whiskey (100 proof if possible), 1 oz applejack (100 proof if possible), 1/4 oz yellow chartreuse, 1/4 oz Benedictine, and a dash of Angostura bitters. Stir well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
