Cocktail of the Week: Whiskey Smash

09.14.09

If like us you’re sad that you won’t be able to get to the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown, Kentucky (September 15-20), perhaps this Dale DeGroff original will soften the blow. These proportions work beautifully with Makers Mark; if you use another brand, you may have to adjust slightly (starting with a bit less simple syrup, for example).

3 lemon pieces (cut a lemon in half and then quarter one of the halves, use three of the quarters)
5 mint leaves
1 ounce simple syrup
1 1/2 ounces Makers Mark Bourbon
Lemon wedge for garnish
1 mint sprig for garnish

Muddle the lemon pieces, mint leaves, and simple syrup in the bottom of a Boston shaker glass. Add the bourbon and shake well with ice. Strain into a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and a lemon wedge.
